TOP TEN OF THE LOOP

Ahoy Blog Followers ๐Ÿ˜Š

On August 31st we completed the Great American Loop, and then spent a week celebrating in New York City! After a fun week in NYC we continued up the Hudson River to Albany (retracing our summer 2014 trip). From there we traveled the Erie Canal. The Erie was new territory....and we really enjoyed the unique towns, history and scenery. Thistle is tucked away in heated winter storage along the Erie Canal until next spring or summer.

Yes, everyone is asking us....what is your next plan? We really don’t know ๐Ÿ˜ฑ at this time we are keeping most of our options open ๐Ÿ‘. Promise, Blog Followers, ๐Ÿคž you will be the first to know.

We have now had a few months to reflect on our Great American Loop Adventure and thought it would be entertaining to post a TOP TEN list in honor of David Letterman, since we started and finished the Loop in New York City. The two of us made separate lists, then compared and discussed until we agreed on our TOP TEN “STOPS” and “MOMENTS” on our Loop ⚓️. We hope you have as much fun reading the list (below) as we did creating it ๐Ÿ˜.

LOOPER TIP: We follow many Looper Blogs and have appreciated all of tips we have learned. Hopefully, our list will inspire you to create your own...to help guide, past, present and future Loopers.

Sending warm Holiday wishes to Y’All ♥️!

And a special Thank You to The AGLCA Home Office ๐Ÿ’™!

P.S. We thought you would like to know that some habits are hard to break๐Ÿ˜œ after being back to our land home for months.....We still read the AGLCA Forum every morning, check the NY marine weather forecast for Thistle, text our Looper Boat Buddies, look at Eddy’s Weather Wag, read your Blogs and dream about our next adventure ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ❌⭕️.

On the Great American Loop.
(Not in any order....).

1.๐Ÿ’™Sharing Boat Cards.
We have exchanged over 300 Boat Cards...it’s the first step towards making New Looper Friends ๐Ÿ˜Š.
The comradery between Loopers is very special!

2.๐Ÿ’™Swimming at Alligator Reef...Florida Keys.
On a beautiful day we were headed north along the Keys towards Miami.
On the navigation chart we noticed a reef about 5 miles off shore.
We decided to head out to Alligator Reef...
Once there we snorkeled in the warm, crystal clear tropical Atlantic Ocean ๐Ÿ !
✌️ Smile ๐Ÿ˜Š

3.๐Ÿ’™Mama Bear and two cubs on Beausoleil Island, Ontario, Canada.
We had family visitors aboard Thistle and decided to go on a bike ride around the Island.
The ride was much more strenuous than anticipated....
and all of the sudden we realized that the two cubs were between us and the Mama Bear  ๐Ÿ˜ฑ‼️
No time for a picture.....we peddled so fast back to the ranger station (Never ๐Ÿ‘€ looking back ๐Ÿคฃ).

4.๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™Festivals.
We enjoyed three unbelievably memorable Festivals.

๐Ÿ’™ The Ottawa BeerFest ๐Ÿบ, Ottawa, Canada.
Docked along the Wall in beautiful downtown Ottawa we noticed a Festival
being set up across the Canal.
We decide to attend and the next day our picture was in the newspaper!
A few locals stopped by Thistle to say ๐Ÿ‘‹.

๐Ÿ’™Wine Along the River, Mobile, Alabama.
We docked in downtown Mobile for one night. Upon checking-in, we were informed that the First ever Mobile Wine ๐Ÿท Festival was happening that evening. We walked to the Festival (~ 50 yards) to purchase tickets and were asked if we would rather volunteer...that sounded great! We were arbitrarily assigned to pour California wines...too much fun ๐Ÿ˜Š.

๐Ÿ’™Mile O Fest, Key West, Florida.
While docked in Key West we read about a Red Dirt ๐ŸŽถ Music Festival.
We looked into purchasing tickets and they were astrometricly expensive๐Ÿ’ฐ.
So, we signed up to volunteer. Three days of great music..with a few hours of volunteer assignments.
We are now Red Dirt Fans ๐ŸŽป.

5.๐Ÿ’™Bad River, Ontario, Canada.
We were anchored in a picture perfect location in the Georgian Bay.
That evening we were invited to another boat in the Bay to play cards (Euchre).
We paddled our Stand Up Boards over in the daylight...but,
the card game went on longer that anticipated?
Paddling back in pitch darkness (no lights for miles) ....
we witnessed the dazzling Perseids Meteor Shower.
Just close your eyes and imagine 100’s of shooting stars  ๐ŸŒ  !
That area of the Loop there is no cell service...we had no idea what was happening ๐Ÿคฉ.
We slept on Thistle’s flydeck, “Counting Our ๐Ÿ€ Lucky Stars”.

6.๐Ÿ’™The Crossing: Applachicola, Florida to Tarpon Springs, Florida.
It’s the only overnight passage on the Great American Loop.
We were both slightly nervous.. all went well๐Ÿ‘.
We departed Applachicola about 11 am and reached Tarpon Springs about 11 am the following day.
There were 7 Loopers in our flotilla,
the lead boat checked-in with all of by radio ever hour on the hour.

The Lock Master allowed us to traverse up the Lock and back down again ๐Ÿ‘.
Toooooooo Cooooool๐Ÿ˜Ž.

9.๐Ÿ’™Bobby’s Fish Camp, Tombigbee River, Alabama.
One of the oldest restaurants in Alabama and a must stop for Loopers.
The Camp was fantastic....but,
The reason it made our Top Ten Memory list is because of the beautiful sunrise on the morning we were departing.
While on the Loop we have had some spectacular sunsets and sunrises...this one was tops with the fog and pink morning sky๐ŸŽ€.

10. ๐Ÿ’™Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor, New York.
We started our Great American Loop at The Statue of Liberty on June 30, 2014

STATUE OF LIBERTY

AUGUST 31, 2018.....WHAT AN AWSOME DAY ❗️

We officially “Crossed our Wake” today at the Statue of Liberty๐Ÿ˜Š.
Finishing The Great American Loop on our 33rd Wedding Anniversary ... It’s Golden for us๐Ÿ’›!

Today is a double celebration of pure love, joy, happiness and with heartfelt gratitude we would like to THANK YOU ♥️ for sharing this incredible day with us (no matter where you are) ❌⭕️.

Looper Tip: Take some extra time to remember and reflect on your favorite photos, port stops and memories along the unbelievable Great American Loop Adventure. We will share this in another blog post in a few days ⭐️.

Today we traveled about 16 miles from Staten Island to Liberty Landing Marina.
❌to ❌ the red line.

It was probably the roughest day on the water of the entire Loop.
We actually had second thoughts about our departure ... with 20+ knot winds, 5 foot seas on our beam and spray reaching us on the flybridge?

Boats of all sizes in New York Harbor.

The exciting New York City Skyline.
Once inside the Harbor the wind and seas calmed down.

The Statue of Liberty ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

Reenie is on Thistle’s bow, ready to hoist our Gold Looper Burge.

DELAWARE - NEW JERSEY - NEW YORK

Ahoy⚓️

We have enjoyed an absolutely beautiful weather window the last few days ๐Ÿ˜Š. Traveling from Chesapeake City, MD all the way to Staten Island, NY. Most Loopers stage (have to wait) in Delaware City, DE to make the long (about 90 mile) trip down the Delaware River to Cape May, NJ. Well.....we got lucky ๐Ÿ€ and decided to skip Delaware City and head directly from Chesapeake City to Cape May.

Cape May is a historic picturesque town on the southern tip of New Jersey, where the Delaware River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of our country’s oldest vacation resort destinations. The town has a year round population of about 3,500 and swells to over 50,000 in the summer months. The entire town of Cape May is designated a National Historic District due its concentration of Victorian Buildings. Cape May was awarded a top 10 beach destination by The Travel Channel in 2008.

Cape May’s Congress Hall, was built in 1816. It is recognized as the United States oldest seaside resort. Reenie has many fond memories ♥️ of visiting Cape May and (sometimes) staying at Congress Hall, while volunteering for the United States Surf Lifesaving Association.

Atlantic City was our next port stop. Atlantic City is known for its many casinos, wide beach and iconic Boardwalk. The City was originally built in the 1800’s as a health resort (FYI: We didn’t see too many health conscious visitors...๐Ÿคช). Today Atlantic City is dotted with glitzy high-rise hotels, ubiquitous gambling and night clubs. The famous Boardwalk was originally built in 1870 along the beach in an effort to help hotel owners keep sand out of their lobbies. Another piece of history we enjoyed learning, was that the original Monopoly board game was based on the Streets of Atlantic City (Hope this helps your Jeopardy score someday)! I know you are wondering......๐Ÿง? ....Yes, we played Blackjack for an hour or so...and actually won our slip fee ๐Ÿ’ฐ.

One night in Atlantic City was fun, but enough....๐Ÿ˜. The following morning we pushed off the dock headed to the Manasquan Inlet. The Inlet is notorious for extremely strong currents and dangerous docking conditions. Boaters need to plan carefully to arrive at a slack tide. We planned and replanned ...everything was great at Hoffman’s Marina, we were very happy for the experienced Dockhands assistance. The town of Manasquan has a gorgeous beach and voted one of the best places to live in New Jersey.

The next morning we couldn’t leave the dock until the slack tide @ 11am. It was another perfect day to travel along the 130 mile Jersey Shore ๐Ÿ– ๐ŸŒŠ☀️. We continued north about 30 miles and turned to port after Sandy Hook and dock at Great Hills Yacht Club on Staten Island.

Stanton Island is the third largest, least populated and wealthiest of the New York City boroughs. It’s name comes from early Dutch settlers. They purchased the Island in 1630 and named it after “Staten-General”, the highest governing body in their home country. We have really enjoyed our three nights at the Yacht Club. John our Harbor Host has been wonderful here “ON” Staten Island (Trying to speak like a local)...People live “ON” Staten Island and “IN” Manhattan (an easy way to spot an out of towner๐Ÿ˜‰?). Everyone seems to be Italian here on Staten Island, including lots of great Italian restaurants and markets๐Ÿ˜‹. It’s actually almost like being in a foreign country...a few times we had ask someone to please speak a little slower?

Staten Island was home to the worlds largest landfill (dump). It closed in 2001 and is scheduled to open as a park in 2019. Staten Island is also the hometown of three Jersey Shore TV ๐Ÿ“บ stars ⭐️. The show is known for its crazy on screen antics....after being here for four days we feel like Staten Island Life is basically a continuous Reality TV Show (and we are whole heartedly enjoying every monument ๐Ÿ˜€).

Looper Tip: Great Kills Yacht Club is a must stop.

We are going to sleep tonight with mixed emotions (excitement, pleasure, sadness, happiness, pride, anticipation, love, joy, gratitude)......Weather permitting we will head to The Statue of Liberty ๐Ÿ—ฝ next and “Cross Our Wake”, finishing The Great American Loop❗️
